September 1, 2008 – Dr. Ron Wright, chancellor, has announced that all Delgado Community College locations, including all campuses, learning centers and sites will remain closed through Sunday, September 7. All Louisiana Technical College (LTC) Region 1 campuses and centers will also remain closed through Sunday, September 7. E.J. LEVEE DISTRICT PARTIALLY CLOSES AIRLINE HWY.
Fran Campbell, Executive Director of the East Jefferson Levee District, has announced that today (Sunday) at 2 p.m. Airline Highway was reduced to two lanes – one inbound and one outbound – as crews began closing the levee at the St. Charles-Jefferson Parish Line in Kenner.
Airline Highway, U.S. 61, crosses the west return levee at that point and the roadway has been closed when high waters from emergency storm events threaten the area. Campbell said anyone with questions about the partial and/or eventual closure of the highway should call her at 733-0087.

Governor Bobby Jindal Issues Executive Order of Closure of Schools
BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal issued an executive order suspending classes from Tuesday, September 2nd to Wednesday, September 3rd in thirty school districts.
Executive Order Emergency Closure of Schools: The following thirty (30) school districts will suspend classes for Tuesday, September 2, 2008, and Wednesday, September 3, 2008: Avoyelles, Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Caldwell, Catahoula, Claiborne, Concordia, DeSoto, East Baton Rouge, East Carroll, Franklin, Grant, Jackson, LaSalle, Lincoln, Madison, Morehouse, Natchitoches, Ouachita, Rapides, Red River, Richland, Sabine, Tensas, Union, Vernon, Webster, West Carroll, and Winn.

Closing of Jefferson Parish Government Buildings
Joseph S. Yenni Building and the General Government Building will close at the end of business today, Saturday, August 30, 2008. Currently, 24th J.D.C., First Parish Court, Second Parish Court and Juvenile Court are closed. These facilities will suspend business operations and remain closed until the threat of Hurricane Gustav is over.
Esplanade Mall Closes
In accordance with The Esplanade and Prien Lake Mall's hurricane procedures, the malls will close at noon today and remain closed through tomorrow, Sunday, August 31.
Capital One Announces Bank Closures
Capital One Bank today announced the following news regarding its branch operations in advance of Hurricane Gustav:
In Southeast Louisiana:
- The Court House and Civic Center branches in St. Bernard Parish will close at noon today.
- The Larose branch in Lafourche Parish is closed today.
- The University branch in Uptown New Orleans closed at 10 a.m. today.
- The St. Charles Avenue branch lobby is open today, but the drive-up is not.
- The Eastover branch lobby will close at noon today. The drive-up is not open today.
- The Destrehan and Boutte branches in St. Charles Parish will close at noon.
In Southwest Louisiana:
- The Cameron branch, which is housed in a mobile unit, is being temporarily relocated and will be closed until further notice.
Customers of these branches have the option of using other Capital One branches that offer Saturday banking and are maintaining regular hours. They also have the option of using Capital One ATMs and the Capital One’s Online Banking service at www.capitalonebank.com. Capital One Bank will continue to monitor the hurricane’s movement and make decisions about branch closings based on developments.
USCIS Closes New Orleans Office
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that it will close its New Orleans field office on Tuesday, September 2, due to the projected path of Hurricane Gustav. The office is located at: Metairie Centre, Suite 300 (Third Floor), 2424 Edenborn Ave., Metairie, LA 70001. USICS announced earlier today that it would close offices, if necessary, along the Gulf of Mexico coastline in the projected path of Hurricane Gustav. If an office is closed, or our customers are evacuated from their homes, USCIS will automatically reschedule all appointments until a time when it is safe to resume operations. However, if necessary, customers may make an INFOPASS appointment in another USCIS office. Winn Dixie Closings
As preparations are underway for Hurricane Gustav’s approach to the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Winn-Dixie has temporarily closed four of its stores in the New Orleans area. LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans to Close
Because of the threat of Hurricane Gustav, LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans will close at 6:00 PM on Saturday, August 30, 2008. This includes the LSU School of Medicine, the LSU School of Dentistry, the LSU School of Nursing, the LSU School of Allied Health Professions, the LSU School of Public Health, and the LSU School of Graduate Studies. At this time, we plan to reopen the campus on Thursday, September 4, 2008 if conditions permit safe operation.
Slidell City Court Closure
Out of concern for the safety of the public who may attempt to travel in adverse weather conditions, Slidell City Court Judge James “Jim” Lamz will close Slidell City Court on Tuesday, Sept. 2, following the Labor Day holiday on Monday. All activities are closed, including Juvenile Drug Court. Anyone expected in court that day who has not yet been notified by a Court official should call the Court on Wednesday, Sept. 3, beginning at 8:30 a.m. to reschedule their case. Delgado and LTC Closings
All Louisiana Technical College (LTC) Region 1 campuses and centers will also be closing effective 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, Aug. 29. At this time, Delgado and LTC Region 1 are scheduled to remain closed through at least Tuesday, Sept. 2. Delgado’s Hurricane Emergency Planning and Response Team is actively following weather advisories for tropical storm Gustav and will communicate further notifications about classes and business operations per ongoing assessment. St. Tammany School Closings
St. Tammany Parish Public Schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, to provide the community with the time needed to deal with the threat of Hurricane Gustav. “We know that many of our employees’ and students’ families will leave town this holiday week-end, with plans to remain away from home until the uncertainties about Hurricane Gustav become clear,” said Superintendent Gayle Sloan. Parents and employees are advised to consult the School System Web site, Channel 13 on Charter Cable Communications, our emergency message center (inside the parish, 985-635-0801, Press 1, outside the parish, 1-800-580-1874), and local media for updated information about any further days of school closing and information about when schools will reopen NOMA Closed this Weekend.
The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) will be closed
The Museum will close Friday at 3 p.m. and will not resume regular public hours until after Gustav has passed through Southeast Louisiana.As per its regular schedule, the Museum will remain closed Monday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 2. NOMA is scheduled to resume its normal operating hours on Wednesday, September 3, when the Museum will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Because the outcome of Hurricane Gustav could affect the reopening, patrons are encouraged to call the Museum at (504) 658-4100 or check the Museum homepage at www.noma.org for updates on post-storm public hours.
UNO Closings
The University of New Orleans will close all campuses and learning centers today, Friday, August 29, at 4:30 p.m. as the community prepares for Tropical Storm Gustav. The University will reopen on Thursday, September 4, at 8 a.m. Classes have been canceled and University offices will be closed on Saturday, August 30, Tuesday, September 2 and Wednesday, September 3. The University is closed on Monday, September 1 in honor of Labor Day. UNO’s Emergency Preparedness Task Force is closely following weather advisories for Tropical Storm Gustav and will continue to make decisions based on protecting the safety and security of the University community. Be sure to check the UNO Web site at www.uno.edu for updates. UNO Web site and UNO e-mail capabilities will be maintained throughout the storm watch preparation and beyond.
Louisiana SPCA is now closed
The Louisiana SPCA is now closed to the public, so that it may evacuate of all its shelter animals to its shelter partner in Baton Rouge. It will also be evacuating all other animals, strays and adoptable animals, to partner shelters in Texas. It's recommended that you have a pet carrier, portable kennel or crate for each pet and have written copies of vaccination records, any necessary medication, veterinarian contact information and a recent picture of your pet.
Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter to Begin Animal Evacuation Plans
The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelters (JPAS) are now putting into place its shelter evacuation plans due to Hurricane Gastav potentially entering the Gulf of Mexico.
Beginning Thursday, August 28, the Eastbank and Westbank JPAS will be closed. This is to begin the evacuation of all pets in the shelters. Additionally, JPSA will not be accepting any personal pets until further notice. The JPAS strongly encourages all pet owners to include their pets in their personal evacuation plans.
Nicholls Orders Evacuation
Having received the mandatory evacuation orders issued by Lafourche Parish earlier today, the administration of Nicholls State University announced this afternoon that Nicholls students will be evacuated from the campus by 2 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 30. Only emergency personnel, including university police, will remain on campus. Additionally, by order of the state of Louisiana, no shelters – including special needs shelters – will be operating on the Nicholls campus. Once the approaching tropical system has passed, state agencies will determine the location and type of shelters, if any, that will be available within Lafourche Parish.
Loyola University Closings and Cancellations
Due to the possibility of severe weather conditions from Tropical Storm Gustav, Loyola University New Orleans will cancel all classes and events Friday, August 29 and officially suspend operations on its campus effective Saturday morning, August 30.
All staff are to report to work Friday morning, but will be dismissed by noon with their supervisors’ approval. The university has ordered a mandatory evacuation of campus for all students, faculty and staff which will go into effect Saturday, August 30. All buildings on campus will be locked by 9 a.m. that morning.
Loyola has implemented its emergency action plan, which can be found on our website at www.loyno.edu. This plan includes provisions for the complete evacuation of all students living on campus and instructions for all faculty and staff.
University administration will relocate over the weekend to an emergency office of operations in Dallas and expects to be fully operational Sunday.
Classes will resume Tuesday morning, September 2, on Loyola’s web-based Blackboard Learning System. At this time, it is anticipated that normal university operations and on-campus classes will resume on Thursday, September 4.

All classes after 12:00 noon on Friday are canceled, and classes are currently scheduled to resume on Thursday morning, September 4. All campus offices and buildings will be officially closed by 4:00PM on Friday afternoon.

JEFFERSON PARISH - Non-essential Parish Offices and Activities to Close
Indefinitely at End of Day, Aug. 29, 2008
Non-essential Jefferson Parish activities and facilities, such as parks, playgrounds and libraries, will suspend operations indefinitely at the end of the day today, Aug. 29, 2008, at their normal closing times. Events scheduled through today and this evening will proceed as planned.
Jefferson Transit (JeT) buses will change operations as of midnight tonight so that the parish transit buses can prepare for their role in the publicly assisted evacuation.
Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, the buses will run their normal routes and stop at all established bus stops to pick up those residents who have no other means to evacuate the parish.
On Saturday and continuing throughout the publicly assisted evacuation, JeT buses will take all passengers to one of the two Parish Processing Points, the Joseph S. Yenni Building in Elmwood on the East Bank or the John Alario Events Center in Westwego on the West Bank. Once there, passengers will be transferred to buses provided by the state to be taken to an emergency evacuation shelter out of the area. Rhonda P. Ferry Service
Crescent City Connection Ferry Service at Lower Algiers/Chalmette, Algiers/Canal Street, and Gretna/Jackson Avenue suspended as of 12 noon Saturday, August 30. Ferry service will resume ASAP after storm threat passes.

Workers' Compensation District Courts closed
The Louisiana Workforce Commission announced the temporary closure of three of its Office of Workers' Compensation District Courts as Tropical Storm Gustav prepares to enter the Gulf of Mexico.
